Chapter 3

Bobby’s car stops and he gets out. A moment later he pulls me out of the car. “Alyssa? Are you okay?” He asks, looking at me.  I can’t look at him. I don’t want to look him in the eye for fear of getting upset. I don’t want to lose my head. Bobby drags me away from the car and into the hospital. I still refuse to look up. I barely notice the people talking around me, the hustling nurses and doctors. I don’t notice the people staring at me because I was too busy to staring at the floor. “This is Alyssa Moore, we were told her sister has been omitted here?” Bobby’s voice sounds weird, and far away again. I don’t hear the next part of the sentence because that’s when I look up and see the answer in the nurse’s eyes.

“I’m sorry to inform you that your sister has died in a car crash coming home from school.” She speaks calmly. Yet my heart speeds up and I can’t feel my eyes stinging. I don’t understand why they kept saying that. Kate was fine last time I saw her. Mom was going to get her.

“Can I see her?” I croak out, I hadn’t even noticed my throat hurt so badly. It feels like someone was strangling me, and I could barely get air through it. The woman shook her head. This made me mad. Why wouldn’t they let me go see Kate.

“Why can’t I go see her? Why do you keep saying she’s dead?” I ask, shakily. I raise my voice a bit so she could hear me better. The nurse looks at Bobby then back at me, her expression solemn. I frown hard and glare at her.

“This isn’t funny, my mother was going to get Kate from school. Why am I even here? Kate is probably at home. Bobby, did you put them up to this?” I turn to glare at him. He looks stunned for a moment before he shakes his head.

“Kid, why would I do that to you? I’m not that cruel. Why did you trust that woman to do anything Alyssa? “He looks away from to me look at the nurse, “Was anyone even with Katie when it happened? “ I look at the nurse and she shakes her head. I growl. They are lying! Mom wouldn’t dare do this! This is too low, even for her!

“No! You’re lying!” I cry desperately. I didn’t want this. Kate is fine!

Bobby takes my shoulders in his hands and shakes me. “Alyssa, Kate is dead.” He makes me look in his eyes as he said it again, but softer. “She’s gone.”

“She is dead sweetie… I’m sorry to have to tell you that, but she is dead….” The nurse says softly, but no matter how softly you tell a lie, it’s still a lie. I wish she would stop lying to me. I just want to get Kate and leave. They are annoying me, so I slap Bobby’s hands off of me and I glare at them both.

“Stop lying, this isn’t funny!” I yell loudly, but they just look at each other and the nurse sighs.

“Fine, I will show you to your sister.” The nurse spoke, rather annoyed. I smile; finally she was stopping the charade. Bobby looks at her and grabs her arm. They whisper at each other, I can’t really understand what they’re saying. Bobby looks a little pissed, and the nurse keeps looking from me to him. They speak for a few minutes, and I’m getting even more impatient. I tap my foot on the white tile and grit my teeth harshly.

“Can we just go? Obviously we have to get back to work, and I need to get Kate home and fed.” I growl. This is getting stupid. Whatever they’re whispering about isn’t as important as Katie. I’m so pissed, first they call me here, lying about my sister’s health, then they keep me from seeing her. “Is Kate even here? Why are you wasting my time?” I grumble and Bobby sighs and nods to the nurse.

“I’m sorry, right this way.” She sounds a little miffed, and I didn’t care.  As long as she takes me to Kate so I can leave. She starts walking down a corridor and I follow, looking at the room numbers as I walk. I wonder idly where Kate’s room was, and if she is really okay. I look at

Bobby, who is watching me. His expression is odd, almost like pity. I’m still pissed at him, so frankly I don’t care why he looks sad. The nurse continues to walk us through the halls. The number of people are diminishing slowly, and soon there weren’t any patients around. The halls are more populated by staff than anything. I start to get slightly more curious, where she is taking us?

“Miss, where are we going?” I ask, looking around and frowning more.

“I’m taking you to see your sister.” She spoke softly, glancing back at me. I stare at her, confused. We had passed all of the rooms that hold patients. Why would Katie be back here? I slow my pace and look at the ground. They could very well just be playing some crappy joke again. Before I could open my mouth to say something Bobby pushes me along gently. I glance back at him, but his face shows nothing. He doesn’t look like he cares at all. His expression is blank, and unreadable. This worries me, a lot. What are we doing back here? It felt cold, and I am dreading taking another step forward. Bobby keeps me walking; his hand placed in the middle of my back, making me move forward.

The nurse stops in front of a metal double door with a label over the top of it that read “Morgue”. I furrow my eyebrows and look at the nurse. She looks upset and she opens the door. Obviously she has to be joking, or maybe this is a weird dream. I’ve heard of lucid dreaming. It’s got to be a dream. Bobby pushes me forward into the chilly room. I shudder a breath and look between Bobby and the nurse. “Why… Why did you take me here?”

“I took you to say goodbye to your sister Alyssa. I took you here to prove to you, the Kate is in fact dead.” The nurse whispers softly. She looks at me with a sad expression, and she holds my eyes. I stare back into them, and they look sincere. How can that be? She has to be lying, Kate can’t be dead. I don’t believe it.

“No…” I say, trying to keep calm. I look at Bobby. He couldn’t look in my eyes. I grab his hand and try to make him look at me. “She isn’t dead…. She can’t be…. Bobby, tell her that can’t be true!” I tug on his arm. I can feel myself tearing up, and my throat closing. He still refuses to look me in the eye. I don’t understand. Why isn’t he looking at me? Why won’t he say anything to me. He put his hands on my shoulders and turns me around and points to the body in front of me. There lies a girl with long honey blond hair, the same color as Katie’s, but that could be anyone!
